The U.S. Department of Agriculture's 3 decades old "food Pyramid" is finally under close scrutiny.  It's lack of support for vitamin and botanical therapy is also being questioned.  But first, let's examine the low-fat high carb controversy.

Dr. Atkins, shortly before his death,  said on Larry King Live (CNN) that "back in 1970, we didn't have a lot of obesity, but then it started to increase.  In 1970, 40% of our diet was fat.  By 2000, it decreased to 32%.  During those same years, according to the U.S. Government, the  intake of refined sugar increased by 30 pounds per year per person.  Bread and other starches of grains increased 64 pounds per person."

Atkins added, "all everybody heard was low fat, low fat, low fat.  This means the average person starting eating more refined carbohydrates and now we have an obesity and diabetes epidemic. Refined carbs  are the cause of diabesity!"  (diabetes and obesity).

Dr. Atkins continued, "Carbohydrates that are predominately white floor and/or sugar cause hunger."
